Default I never even heard of this, so I looked it up.

It was a 32-bit system released in (HOLY SHAM) 1991, and was marketed exclusively in Japan for a whopping 66,000 yen, roughly 650 dollars. It had a 640x480 resolution and 256 colors, amazing for the time.

Despite being an amazingly powerful system, the complexness and high price was it's downfall.

I hadn't heard about this either until I saw this thread. Then I looked it up, and the first thing I thought was, hey, this looks like a 1991-era Xbox

The interesting thing is that anyone can build one now. Companies like Via sell small motherboards. Add a hard disk, a DVD-R/RW drive and you'd have an FM Towns

Good! Someone hurry up and build an all-purpose game console already that can play any DVD games. I'm waiting! I can't hold out for GTA:4 forever, you know!

It won't be that simple the hardware itself is pretty open, and I suppose you could clean-room it somehow, but most of it will have to be implemented in software emulation mode, and it will be a whole lot slower than on an actual console

Sounds like a great system, but not very well thought out. It was probably impossible to develop for and never got any decent games.

...Or maybe it was a Dreamcast-like flop.
