The consoles cost less because they are taking a loss on the consoles. They are taking a loss on the consoles because they are almost useless without games. The strategy is to take a loss on consoles, and make it up with the games

I bet a console can easily run an operating system -- people have managed to run linux on a PlayStation 2. If they do that, of course, then people would buy consoles and not buy games, which would actually make them lose money.

Because of this I don't think they will allow consoles to run business applications any time soon.

It would be interesting if they could though wouldn't it ? it would change a lot of things.
